Neurofeedback - Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, non-medical new wave technology. It allows the alteration of brain functioning for the treatment of emotional and behavioral issues.
Q. How is Neurofeedback related to ERMHS©?
Issues to learning and academic performance may be caused due to issues in concentration, attention, memory or emotional issues like anxiety, depression and stress, Neurofeedback therapy maps the problematic areas of the brain and provides a unique training protocol for each child or students’ need. This training helps alter brain waves to a more functional state. It increases focus, and concentration and induces a positive emotional state.
Q. What is the process of Neurofeedback?
In the first neurofeedback session, information is collected through qEEG. This is done by placing electrodes or sensors on the scalp which will record the brain waves. This process takes about 20 minutes, after which a detailed report is provided.
A training protocol is then created according to the unique brain waves of each student. Using a visual or auditory gaming program or software, the student then learns to train their brain for desired functioning.
Q. What is LoRETA?
LORETA is an acronym for low-resolution electromagnetic tomographic analysis. It is the most advanced brain training tool available. It is used to determine which regions of the brain are activated while completing certain mental tasks. It helps to determine if the brain is operating in an electrically optimal way.
Q. What kind of issues can be treated with Neurofeedback?
It can be used in the treatment of a wide variety of emotional and behavioral issues like stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mood related disorders, substance use and abuse, ADHD, dyslexia, and autism to name a few.
Q. What is the outcome of Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback helps improve learning and performance by boosting cognition, concentration and learning. It also improves overall mood, induces relaxation, and trains the brain to maintain its calm, even during stressful and demanding situations.
Q. How many sessions are needed?
After the first assessment session, a minimum of 5 sessions (approx 40 min each) is recommended for any visible progress or effects.
Q. Is only Neurofeedback enough for treating emotional and behavioral disorders?
Though neurofeedback provides the initial boost necessary for brain training, maintaining its consistency depends on the individual.
So, we recommend attending psychotherapeutic sessions with a counselor along with neurofeedback. This will help the child maintain their newly learnt brain functioning and will also have a long-term, sustainable effect on academic performance, emotional and behavioral development.
Q. Is neurofeedback safe?
The machine and the headset with the sensors are absolutely safe for adults as well as children.
Q. Is neurofeedback safe for children with a history of epilepsy/ seizures?
Yes, neurofeedback is safe and also helps in the treatment of seizures and other related disorders.
